Video: Nico Vega performing Beast Live @ Crash Mansion NYC (Fearless Music)

Bioshock Infinite did the world a favour when it tied its latest game trailer to the primal sounds of Nico Vega’s song Beast. I love the band’s energy in the live performance of Beast for Fearless Music. The song has been pervading around my head for a month now but seeing the band perform the song live is quite something else (in video format!).

Where was this band hiding previously? Why am I so captivated by the lead singer Aja Volkman and her vocal intensity and breaks into lyrical poetry? Has she been suitably inspired by her musical heroes Janis Joplin and Tina Turner?

The four-piece alternative-rock band formed in Los Angeles, California and are signed to both MySpace Records and Interscope so I would have thought I would have heard of the band previously. Successful singer-songwriter and label owner Linda Perry (4 Non Blondes) has even produced their material and tied Aja up and blindfolded her while recording the song So So Fresh in the studio.

The actor Michael Pena (Gangster Squad, End of Watch, Million Dollar Baby) was the founding member of the band way back in 2005 and the band was actually named after his mother (who also helped Aja through a tough time). Nico Vega have supported Blondie, Manic Street Preachers, and Bush on tour.

A sign of a great rock band is how well they can perform acoustically. Check out Nico Vega performing Fury Oh Fury Live on 91X:

I love the way Aja’s voice sounds vulnerable on Iron Man, it reminds a lot of Chan Marshall of Cat Power:

Another rock number from the band is Blood Machine:

Originally released in 2006 Beast features on the band’s EP chooseyourwordspoorly and has been re-released for the Fury Oh Fury EP.

Nico Vega’s new album We Are The Art is due to be released in early summer in the US (June/July 2013).
