Video: Joan as Police Woman The Magic video clip

Joan Wasser is the spectacular Joan as Police Woman. You might know her from her performances in Antony & The Johnsons, Rufus Wainwright, The Dambuilders (on violin!), or as the girlfriend of Jeff Buckley at his time of passing.

Joan’s third album The Deep Field released in 2011 is a very truthful, soulful, ode to a new lover. Accepting of the past and moving forward.

Joan toured for many years with Antony & The Johnsons until she gained the courage and strength to perform solo. You can understand how difficult it might have been for Joan to return to release music professionally after such a profound loss.

Fuck, I was depressed at the time of Jeff’s death, but I can’t imagine how devastating it would have been to have been the lover of an amazing artist like Jeff. Everybody Here Wants You was obviously penned for her.

The film clip for The Magic (from the album) shows the humourous side of Joan, with big muscly weightlifters in tiny swimmers weightlifting fish. WTF? I bought the album on the basis of this clip alone (okay and its a damn good song!).

The opening track from The Deep Field is Nervous:

The Flash is another stand-out track from the album which outlines her desire to give in wholeheartedly to her new love:

In pleasant news, Joan was recording new songs during April to June (across 5 recording studios!) to release on her next album. Apparently one of the new songs she wrote may have been sweet enough to sell onto ol’ rockers Foreigner! Get ready Cold As Ice fans!

I cannot fathom how The Deep Field did not end up on many of the top 10 albums lists of 2011. It is a crime, everybody involved should be punished.

Fuck off and go and listen to it now!

About noisynoodle

I am a noisy noodle hailing from Melbourne, Australia who loves listening to noise in all forms, but preferably in music, TV and film. I’ve moonlighted on community radio at SYN-FM many years ago when I was still a “youth”. My mission is to promote live music (get off your bum and see something!), highlight interesting TV shows that are ignored by the ratings, expose some cool films and to not go deaf trying!

Her music is a little quiet for me for some reason, but I must admit I have a couple of her albums.
